The wider UK employment market has slowed, but nuclear continues to offer strong long-term career prospects.
UK employers had an estimated 712,000 vacancies between April and June 2026. This was 18,000, or 2.5%, lower than the same period in 2025. The nuclear sector is moving in a different direction, supported by major civil, defence, decommissioning and research programmes.
For nuclear professionals, this creates opportunities across a much wider range of roles than many people may expect.
The nuclear workforce is growing
The latest published Nuclear Workforce Assessment reported a UK nuclear workforce of approximately 96,000 people.
The total reported figure increased from 83,000 in the previous assessment. However, the data needs some explanation. Around 43% of the increase came from additional organisations taking part in the assessment. Across sites included in both years, the workforce grew by approximately 7,000 people, with defence nuclear accounting for 57% of that growth.
The assessment also reported a near doubling in the number of workers aged under 20. More than 1,100 apprentices and graduates joined the sector during the year covered by the report.
These figures point to a sector that is expanding while also making a serious effort to build its future workforce.
Major programmes are creating demand
Several national programmes are now moving from policy and planning into delivery.
The government’s latest estimate states that Sizewell C will support around 17,000 jobs across the UK at peak construction. Earlier project commitments included 1,500 apprenticeships and opportunities across construction, welding, manufacturing, engineering and the wider supply chain.
The UK’s small modular reactor programme has also reached an important stage. Great British Energy, Nuclear signed a contract with Rolls-Royce SMR in April 2026 to begin work towards delivering the first UK units. The initial project is expected to support around 3,000 jobs at peak construction, plus thousands more across the supply chain. More than £350 million in supply-chain contracts had already been awarded during 2026 when the agreement was announced.
Demand in defence nuclear is also rising. The Defence Nuclear Enterprise currently supports an estimated 47,600 jobs, with workforce demand expected to reach around 65,000 by 2030. Plans include creating 22,000 apprenticeship opportunities and 9,000 graduate roles over the next ten years.
Long-term work also continues across existing power stations, decommissioning sites, radioactive waste management, fuel, fusion research and regulation. This means the nuclear jobs market is not dependent on one project or one technology.
Nuclear needs more than nuclear engineers
The current market shows demand across technical, professional, operational and commercial functions.
Recent vacancies on the Nuclear Institute Jobs Board have included:
- Nuclear safety and probabilistic safety analysis.
- Protective security.
- Human factors.
- Mechanical fitting.
- Construction and structures supervision.
- Project mobilisation.
- Software testing and supportability engineering.
Current salary examples include £50,000 to £60,000 for a probabilistic safety analysis consultant and £65,000 to £80,000 for a senior consultant. Recent Office for Nuclear Regulation vacancies have advertised salaries between £71,200 and £100,030, depending on the role and level. These examples are a snapshot and individual vacancies may close or change.
This range shows why people should not rule themselves out because they have not previously worked at a power station. Nuclear employers also need project managers, skilled tradespeople, lawyers, commercial specialists, digital professionals, security experts, communicators and people with experience from other regulated industries.
Competition remains high
A growing sector does not mean that every application will succeed.
Employers need people who can demonstrate competence, sound professional judgement and a clear understanding of safety, security and personal responsibility. Applications should explain how your experience matches the role rather than relying on a general CV.
You should also show how you maintain your professional knowledge. Relevant CPD, professional membership and independent recognition can help employers assess your readiness for greater responsibility.

What should you do next?
Start by deciding which part of the sector best matches your experience. Consider new build, operations, defence, decommissioning, waste management, regulation, research or the supply chain.
Review several job descriptions, including roles above your current level. Look for recurring requirements and use them to plan your next six to twelve months of development.
Keep your CV specific. Include the scale of the work you managed, the standards you worked to and the results you achieved. Where security restrictions apply, describe your responsibilities without sharing protected information.
You should also set up job alerts. New opportunities can move quickly, particularly when employers need specialist or experienced candidates.
